Rochus Misch in front of the Mönichkirchen railway station, near Wiener Neustadt, 1941.

Rudolf Hess, ‘the Führer’s representative’, flew to Scotland on 10 May 1941 to negotiate peace. His flight was considered treachery by the National Socialist government, which declared Hess mentally deranged.

On the stairway leading to the Berghof, 7 June 1941, Hitler proceeds upwards with Tsar Boris III of Bulgaria (to his right): standing, far right, is Walther Hewel, chief of the personal staff of Reich Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop; second left is Albert Bormann, and below him Lieutenant General Adolf Heinz Beckerle, envoy in Sofia. In the driving seat of the Mercedes 770 is the head of the Reich Chancellery motor pool, Erich Kempka.
